Best Grass Types for Holly Springs, NC Lawns (Fescue vs Bermuda)

By Ben Bell · March 22, 2026

Choosing the right grass type is one of the most important decisions you'll make for your Holly Springs lawn. Our area sits in USDA Zone 7b — right in the transition zone where both cool-season and warm-season grasses can grow, but each has trade-offs.

Here's what works best in Holly Springs and the surrounding Wake County area.

Tall Fescue — The Holly Springs Favorite

Best for: Most Holly Springs lawns

Tall fescue is the most common grass type in Holly Springs for good reason:

  • **Stays green year-round** (unlike bermuda, which goes dormant and turns brown in winter)
  • **Shade tolerant** — great for yards with mature trees (common in neighborhoods like Forest Creek and 12 Oaks)
  • **Deep root system** — handles our red clay soil well
  • **Drought resistant** once established

**The downside:** Fescue struggles in extreme summer heat. It needs overseeding every fall to stay thick because it doesn't spread on its own.

**Maintenance level:** Medium — needs mowing at 3–3.5 inches, fall overseeding, and regular fertilization.

Bermuda Grass — The Sun Lover

Best for: Full-sun yards without shade

Bermuda is popular in newer Holly Springs developments with less tree cover:

  • **Extremely heat tolerant** — thrives in our hot NC summers
  • **Self-repairing** — fills in bare spots on its own
  • **Very dense** — crowds out weeds naturally
  • **Lower water needs** than fescue

**The downside:** Goes completely dormant (brown) from November through March. Also doesn't tolerate shade at all — needs 6+ hours of direct sun.

**Maintenance level:** Medium-high — needs mowing at 1–2 inches (much shorter than fescue), regular fertilization during growing season.

Zoysia — The Premium Option

Best for: Homeowners willing to invest for a premium lawn

Zoysia is gaining popularity in upscale Holly Springs neighborhoods:

  • **Beautiful, dense, carpet-like texture**
  • **Good heat and moderate shade tolerance**
  • **Low water requirements**
  • **Excellent weed resistance** once established

**The downside:** Expensive to install (usually sodded, not seeded). Goes dormant in winter (brown, but less than bermuda). Very slow to establish and spread.

**Maintenance level:** Low-medium once established.

Our Recommendation for Holly Springs

For most Holly Springs homeowners, **tall fescue is the best choice**. It stays green year-round, handles our clay soil and shade well, and looks great with proper care.

If you have a full-sun yard and don't mind winter dormancy, bermuda is a strong alternative that requires less water.
