Black Streaks on Your Roof in NC: What They Are and How to Remove Them

By Ben Bell · September 28, 2026

Drive through almost any neighborhood in Holly Springs or Apex and you will spot them: dark streaks running down the north-facing slope of otherwise fine-looking roofs. Homeowners usually assume the shingles are wearing out. They are not.

It is algae, and it is alive

Those streaks are a blue-green algae called *Gloeocapsa magma*. It feeds on the limestone filler manufacturers mix into asphalt shingles, and it thrives in exactly the conditions we have in the Southeast: heat, humidity, and long warm seasons.

It spreads by airborne spores, which is why you often see three or four houses on the same street streaked at once. One roof gets it, the wind carries spores, and the neighborhood follows.

Why it shows up on one side of the roof

North-facing slopes stay shaded and hold moisture longer, so that is usually where it starts. Roof sections under mature oaks or pines get it early too. If your south-facing slope looks fine and your north slope looks filthy, that is normal and it is a strong sign you are dealing with algae rather than shingle failure.

Why it is worth removing

Beyond curb appeal, there are two real costs:

Roof life. The algae holds moisture against the shingle surface and slowly consumes the filler material. Left alone for years, it accelerates granule loss and shortens the life of the roof.

Cooling costs. Dark streaks absorb more heat than clean shingles, which raises attic temperatures through a Carolina summer and makes your air conditioning work harder.

Cleaning a roof costs a small fraction of replacing one early.

How it should be removed

The correct method is a no-pressure soft wash: a cleaning solution applied at low pressure, allowed to work, then rinsed gently. This is the method asphalt shingle manufacturers and roofing associations recommend.

What you should absolutely avoid is anyone offering to pressure wash your roof. High pressure strips the protective granules off shingles, which is the layer doing the actual work of protecting your house. It can also void your shingle warranty outright. A cheap roof cleaning that takes years off your roof is not a bargain.

Keeping it from coming back

Trim back branches that shade the roof, keep gutters flowing so water does not back up under the shingle edge, and expect to have it treated every few years depending on how much shade your house gets. Homes on wooded lots need it more often than homes on open lots.
